If your house still has halogen downlights, you’re paying for it every quarter without necessarily realising it. LED downlights are one of the more straightforward upgrades that actually shows up on the power bill, and the installation itself is usually simpler than people expect.

Why Halogen Downlights Cost More Than They Should

Halogen downlights run hot and use significantly more power than LED equivalents to produce the same amount of light. They also have a much shorter lifespan, which means more frequent bulb replacements over time. If your house has a dozen or more halogen downlights running most evenings, that adds up in a way that’s easy to overlook because it’s spread across every power bill rather than showing up as one obvious cost.

LEDs use a fraction of the power for equivalent brightness, run cooler, and last considerably longer before needing replacement.

What Affects Installation Cost

Swap vs full replacement. If your existing downlight housings are compatible with LED retrofit globes, the job can be as simple as swapping the light source. More often, especially in older installations, the full housing gets replaced as well, since older housings aren’t always suited to LED units and replacing them properly gets a better result and often better safety compliance around insulation clearance.

Number of downlights. Larger jobs – replacing every downlight through a whole house – benefit from economies of scale compared to doing a handful in one room, since a lot of the job is the same regardless of how many points you’re doing.

Dimmable vs non-dimmable. If you want dimmable LEDs, the compatible dimmer switch sometimes needs replacing too, since older dimmers built for halogen don’t always work correctly with LED loads. This is a common thing people don’t expect until dimming a new LED causes flickering or buzzing.

Insulation clearance. Older downlight housings sometimes require insulation to be kept clear around them due to heat, which limits ceiling insulation coverage. Many newer LED downlights are IC-rated (insulation contact rated), meaning insulation can sit directly over them – this is worth checking if you’re also improving your home’s insulation as part of the same project.

How Long Does It Take

A straightforward swap of existing downlights to LED equivalents is usually a quick job, often completed in a few hours depending on how many points are involved. Full housing replacements take a bit longer per point but are still typically a same-day job for most homes.

Does It Actually Pay Off

Yes, and usually faster than people expect – a lot of homes see the difference within the first billing cycle after switching, particularly if the downlights were running for several hours most evenings beforehand. Combined with other small efficiency upgrades, downlight replacement is one of the more reliable ways to bring down a power bill without changing how you actually use electricity day to day.
